S1001 Integrated Systems Testing

S1001:

    As of January 1, 2020 (Ontario Building Code updates), many projects began requiring Integrated Systems Testing (IST) in accordance with CAN/ULC-S1001 as part of the permit/occupancy close-out process, depending on the local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).

    CAN/ULC-S1001 Integrated Systems Testing (IST) verifies that all interconnected fire protection and life-safety systems operate together as designed—not just as standalone systems.

    It confirms the building’s life-safety “chain reaction” works end-to-end (e.g., fire alarm interactions with other safety functions).

    CAN/ULC-S1001 is intended to satisfy integrated systems testing requirements referenced by the National Building Code of Canada (NBC) and National Fire Code of Canada (NFC) (as adopted by the local AHJ).

    In Ontario, integrated systems testing is referenced in the Ontario Building Code (Division B, 3.2.10 and 9.10.18.10) and is performed in accordance with CAN/ULC-S1001.

    For existing buildings, CAN/ULC-S1001 also includes periodic/maintenance testing requirements that may apply depending on jurisdiction.
